The Motown purists are going to hate this, but I’ve done it to demonstrate that a number of records were released that were based on “Please Mr Postman”, The first and most obvious was Dee Dee Sharp’s “Mashed Potato Time” It was written solely as a follow up to “Postman” but was rejected by Jobete Music. Cameo then released the demo and it made number #1 on Cashbox. Likewise, Carol King and Jerry Goffin wrote “The Locomotion” to present to Jobete as a follow-up, but it was also rejected. But unlike “Mashed Potato Time” Jobete didn’t sue and take over publishing rights. The third record to rip off “Postman” was Bobby (“Boris”) Pickett’s “Monster Mash” the chord progression and the piano top line fit perfectly, but again Jobete didn’t sue for ownership. Turn it over and the instrumental flipside is a perfect example of just how close the record is to “Postman”. I’ve included elements of all three in this remix.
