Mujun - creating a better future with the new generation of Japanese craftsmen (short ver)

Welcome to the world of Mujun! Mujun is a design and craft collective based in the rural Japan where the traditional craft industry still exists. We are a team of designers and young craftsmen who specialize in knife making. Mujun means contradiction in Japanese. In the past 100 years, Japan has developed economically, but it has also declined culturally. We have lost makers. In 2008, we started our design practices, and have worked with craftsmen in different fields. After 10 years of working with the craftsmen, redesigning crafts, and promoting them overseas, we embarked on a new project, Mujun Workshop. We built a small ironsmith workshop next to our design office for young apprentices who aspire to become skilled craftsmen. In 2020, we acquired 200,000 sqm of land in Shimane to build a village of craftsmanship. We decided to call it the Mujun Planet. We believe that the true craftsmen are the ones who can make the most of nature while truly appreciating it. In this village, we aim to rebuild a satoyama lifestyle. Satoyama is a Japanese term that literally means a village (sato) and a mountain (yama). We define this lifestyle as a way of living where craftsmen live and work happily and sustainably alongside the nature. Our vision is to create a better future with the new generation of Japanese craftsmen.
