Icelandic Road-Tunnels #1 The Tunnel To Siglufjörður

The road tunnel to Siglufjörður on the north coast of is the first serious road tunnel to be made in Iceland. The purpose was to make a road to this remote town that could be used all year around. The project started in 1959 with 30m progress and continued from 1964-1967 and the tunnel opened 10th of November 1967. Currant Avg. traffic is 250 cars pr. day. Siglufjörður was then connected to Ólafsfjörður and Eyjafjörður in 2010 when Héðinsfjarðargöng Tunnels opened up, spanning 11km and opening the town fully to the rest of the country but Siglufjörður is located in Tröllaskagi (Troll peninsula) but it's one between the fjord of Skagafjörður and the fjord of Eyjafjorður. The peninsula is mountainous with several peaks reaching over 1200m above sea level, some over 1400m. It is the part of Iceland with the highest elevation outside the central highlands. This tunnels where used in "A Little Trip to Heaven" starring Forest Whitaker, Julia Stiles and Peter Coyote but It is set in 1985 United States, but almost entirely shot in Iceland.
