Jordan Lake is a man-made reservoir located in Chatham County, North Carolina. The lake was created in the early 1960s by the construction of the New Hope Dam by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The dam was built for the primary purpose of providing drinking water for the surrounding area and for flood control. The lake and surrounding land are now used for a variety of recreational activities such as boating, fishing, camping, and hiking. The lake and state recreation area were officially opened to the public in 1965. Crappie is a popular fish species to target when fishing at Jordan Lake. They are often found in large schools and can be caught using a variety of techniques. One popular method for catching crappie at Jordan Lake is to use a small jig or minnow under a bobber. You can cast the jig or minnow around structure like dock pilings, submerged trees, or weed beds and wait for the crappie to bite. Another method to catch crappie is trolling with small crankbaits or spinnerbaits. This technique works well when crappie are suspended in open water. During the spring and fall, crappie can be caught around the lake's shallow flats. They will move into these areas to spawn or feed. It is important to note that Jordan Lake has a 10 fish per day limit and the length limit is 10 inches. It's always a good idea to check the regulation and limits of the lake before fishing. Crappie have a relatively short lifespan, typically living for around 5-8 years. They spawn in the spring, with males building nests in shallow water near structure such as logs or brush piles. Once hatched, the young crappie will feed on small aquatic organisms such as plankton and insects. As they grow, they will gradually shift to a diet of small fish and crustaceans. They are typically active during the day and are known to congregate around structure such as logs, brush piles, and submerged vegetation.
