ERA Era is a strategic military-economic board game in the fantasy genre. As a player, you take on the role of one nation and strive for dominance over an unexplored island that shares the game’s name. Era is a 4X strategy game featuring exploration, expansion, exploitation of resources, and extermination (attacking other players). The game is designed for 2 to 4 players. The number of players also determines the game length. A standard two-player game lasts about two hours, while a standard four-player game lasts around four hours. There is also a shortened seven-round variant: with four players it takes up to three hours, and with two players about an hour and a half. WHAT THE GAME IS ABOUT You take control of one of the nations — Humans, Elves, Dwarves, or Orcs. Each nation has its own specific traits and abilities, which influence your strategy. Using your armies, you expand your territories, build new villages, mine gold, and collect resources. These resources are then reinvested into constructing additional towns or armies that guard them. You can also trade on the market to obtain resources you lack access to on the map, or sell surplus resources for gold. The game combines military and economic strategy. The full game is played over 10 rounds; by building, fighting, and sabotaging, you earn victory points. The player with the most victory points wins. GAME START At the beginning, you start with one town on the edge of the map. Actions, resolved with dice, gradually reveal additional areas called regions. Regions are placed randomly on the map, making the game highly replayable. Each session features a different layout, which affects your strategy, the direction of expansion, access (or lack of access) to certain resources, availability of gold, and overall map mobility. REGIONS There are six types of regions: Forest, Plain, Mountains, Desert, Gold Mine, and Water. Except for Water, each region provides a specific resource. Forests yield wood, Plains yield grain, Mountains yield iron, and Deserts yield stone. The Gold Mine produces gold. Water regions cannot be entered without constructing a bridge. BATTLE If players meet in the same region, a battle occurs. If a hero participates — referred to in the game as a Commander — you may play a Tactics Card that can significantly influence the outcome due to its strength and special abilities. If the battle is undecided, the Power Scales determine the winner, which will be explained later. SABOTAGE AND OTHER MECHANICS In addition to battles and construction, you can pillage enemy settlements and buildings, sabotage opponents by stealing resources, burning a building, or wounding a leader. Players may also trade on the market or directly with each other to obtain resources they do not have access to on the map.
