About Video: SMALL INTESTINE CANCER DEFINITION: 1. Small intestine cancer is a rare disease where cells in the tissue of the small intestine change. They grow out of control and can form a mass, or tumour. 2. Intestinal cancer occurs when cancerous cells form in the small intestine (or small bowel). When cancer develops in the large intestine (also called the large bowel or colon), it is called colorectal cancer. The small intestine connects the stomach to the large intestine. It is divided into three sections: the duodenum, jejunum and ileum. Most types of small intestine cancer develop in the duodenum. INTESTINAL CANCER TYPES The main types of small intestine cancer include: • Adenocarcinomas, the most common type of small intestine cancer, usually develop in the cells that line the walls of the small intestine. Often, this type of cancer will develop out of small benign (noncancerous) growths called polyps. • Sarcoma is a type of intestinal cancer that develops in the connective tissue of the small intestine. • Gastrointestinal stromal tumors are variants of soft tissue sarcoma. • Carcinoid tumors form in the lining of the intestines and are often are slow-growing. • Lymphomas are an immune system disease that may originate in the intestines. CAUSES • The exact cause of small bowel cancers is unknown. In general, small bowel cancer begins when healthy cells in the small bowel develop changes (mutations) in their DNA. A cell's DNA contains a set of instructions that tell a cell what to do. • Healthy cells grow and divide in an orderly way to keep body functioning normally. But when a cell's DNA is damaged and becomes cancerous, cells continue to divide — even when new cells aren't needed. As these cells accumulate, they form a tumor. • With time, the cancer cells can grow to invade and destroy normal tissue nearby. And cancerous cells can spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body. RISK FACTORS Factors that may increase the risk of small bowel cancer include: • Age (average age at diagnosis is 60) • Sex (slightly higher risk in men) • Genetics • Smoking and alcohol use • High-fat diet • Living or working near large quantities of some chemicals, like phenoxyacetic acid • Other conditions that affect gut, like Crohn’s, colon cancer, or celiac disease • Lymphedema (damage to the vessels that connect to the lymph nodes) CLINICAL MANIFESTATION Signs and symptoms of small bowel cancer include: • Abdominal pain • Yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes (jaundice) • Feeling unusually weak or tired • Nausea • Vomiting • Losing weight without trying • Blood in the stool, which might appear red or black • Watery diarrhea • Skin flushing About me : My name is Deepak Singh Patel (M.Sc.
