Think IBD surgery is just about “snipping out” a problem spot? Bowel resection is a major surgical step for Crohn’s and Colitis, often used when meds can’t control inflammation or complications like strictures, blockages, or cancer arise. In this surgery, the damaged part of your intestine is removed and the healthy ends are reconnected—a process called anastomosis. The type of resection depends on where your disease is: ileocecal resection (end of small bowel and start of colon), segmental resection (damaged small intestine), or colectomy (removing part or all of the colon). Surgeons often use keyhole (laparoscopic) techniques for quicker recovery and smaller scars. Every surgery has risks, including leaks, infection, and, if a lot of bowel is removed, short bowel syndrome. Some resections can also lead to vitamin B12 deficiency or bile acid issues, and Crohn’s can return at the join site. Bowel resection can be life-changing, but it’s not a cure—knowing your options helps you take control, not just react. Follow @thegrumblinggut if you found this helpful!
