Erkki Melartin: Hautauslaulu Op. 9, No. 6 Clark Bryan, piano Piano: Yamaha S7X Maintained by Darryl Fabiani at D&S Pianos Piano microphones: AKG C12B Room: AKG C414 Erkki Melartin (1875–1937) was a Finnish composer, conductor, and teacher of the late Romantic and early modern eras, regarded as one of Finland’s most important national composers. Although often overshadowed by his contemporary Jean Sibelius, Melartin developed a highly individual voice shaped by lyricism, rich orchestration, and early Mahlerian influence. His major works include six symphonies, the opera Aino (based on the Kalevala), the Violin Concerto in D minor, the symphonic poem Traumgesicht, and Finland’s first large-scale ballet, The Blue Pearl. His Festive March remains a popular ceremonial and wedding piece, and his songs for voice and piano continue to hold a lasting place in Finnish musical life. As a conductor and educator at the Helsinki Music College (later the Helsinki Conservatory), Melartin had a wide influence and conducted the first Scandinavian performance of Gustav Mahler’s music in 1909. His music bridges Romantic expressiveness and modern harmonic exploration, offering a powerful alternative voice in Finland’s musical landscape. #ErkkiMelartin #FinnishMusic #NordicComposers #RomanticMusic #EarlyModernMusic #ClassicalMusic #OrchestralMusic #FinnishCulture #Kalevala #MahlerInfluence #UnderratedComposers #SymphonicMusic #PianoMusic #ViolinConcerto #NordicClassical
