In “The Secret Caste System of the HBCU Elite,” we examine the untold history of class, colorism, migration, and respectability politics within historically Black colleges and universities. From the rise of the Black professional class in the late 1800s to the Great Migration, the expansion of the Black middle class, and the critique of the Black bourgeoisie by sociologist E. Franklin Frazier, this episode explores how hierarchy formed inside institutions created for liberation. This is not about scandal. It’s about complexity. We discuss: The formation of the Black elite Colorism and “Blue Vein” social circles The impact of the Great Migration on campus culture Respectability politics at HBCUs Redlining and structural racism Desegregation and institutional shifts The evolution of the Black middle class HBCUs produced doctors, lawyers, activists, artists, and judges — but like every American institution, they also reflected the class tensions of the society around them. This is the history beyond the brochure. #HBCU #BlackHistory #BlackElite #BlackBourgeoisie #GreatMigration #Colorism #HBCUHistory #BlackMiddleClass #HistoricallyBlackColleges #AfricanAmericanHistory
