Jay Thomas was a Hollywood entertainer who started a career as a popular radio personality before eventually turning that popularity into minor television stardom. He took many roles over the years, but his most notable role arguably came in the form of the hit television sitcom Cheers. On that program, Jay played the recurring role of Eddie LeBec, the boyfriend of one of the show's regular main characters. That character was Carla Tortelli, as portrayed by Rhea Perlman. The two characters' storyline became a hit with audiences, prompting producers to consider having the two characters get married. This could've resulted in Jay Thomas being promoted to a full-blown series regular. However, fate had other plans. Like this content? Subscribe here: https://www.youtube.com/factsverse?su... However, it appeared that Jay still proved to be a little bit too much for some of his co-workers. After a behind-the-scenes incident, the producers decided to have Eddie killed off abruptly. Jay's career continued on after this incident in varying forms, despite Eddie continuing to be his most widely-noted role. After Cheers, Jay was cast as a guest star in the popular program Murphy Brown. This role became a repeating one and saw Jay win two separate Emmy Awards for his performance, one in 1990 and another in 1991. From there, the actor then made an attempt to branch off into film. However, he didn't quite see the success on the big screen that he had been hoping for. Eventually, he decided to return to radio full-time, taking on his own talk show for satellite radio. Starting in 1998, Jay Thomas began making annual holiday appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman. The tradition was started when he was called on to play the "Late Night Quarterback Challenge". On his second appearance, Jay told an anecdote about meeting Clayton Moore of The Lone Ranger fame while working at a radio station in the 1970s. The story became so popular that Jay was asked to retell it every subsequent visit after that. This tradition continued for over a decade, until 2013. That year, Jay had to call out of his scheduled appearance due to surgery. Soon after, in 2017, he passed away. Jay played many roles over the years, both in real life and on television. He was an actor, comedian, and accomplished radio personality. In retrospect, it's hard to pick out which hat fit him the best. He had many fans, but arguably never made the impression on the audience that he wanted to. That is, outside of his appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman. Perhaps if the actor had been able to keep his behavior better during his work on Cheers, he might've been able to get better work as his career continued into later years. However, it simply wasn't meant to be. Join Facts Verse as we attempt to uncover why Jay Thomas was killed off in Cheers. Why Jay Thomas Was Killed Off in Cheers
