Black is counterattacking in the center in King's Gambit style and weakening the kingside in the process. It's also called the Jaenisch Gambit, but, since that's also a gambit in the English, we will call this the Schliemann! 3...Nf6, Berlin Defense: The Berlin is a tough opening. I thought for a long time before deciding on which equal position to go for. In reality, white cannot guarantee an advantage against Nf6. This is a far more useful move than a6 since it indirectly defends e5 and it develops at the same time. 3...Bc5, Classical Variation: The Classical Variation is an alternative to the Closed Ruy Lopez, Open Ruy Lopez or the Archangel black has at their disposal on three. It's one of the sidelines they can play after Bb5, along with the Berlin, the Bird, the Fianchetto, the Steinitz, the Cozio, and the Schliemann. 3...Nd4, Bird Defense: This defense is very complex. It has been played by great players like Ivanchuk or Morozevich. It gives black very active play. The Spanish Bird structure is complex. Black will have a very straightforward task ahead - breaking the position with d5, and trying to put pressure on e4. They will do that with c6, d5. 3...Nge7, Cozio Defense: The Cozio is not a good opening. Ivan Sokolov says in his Ruy Lopez Revisited that black cannot hope to equalize with it. Nevertheless it's a complex system. The main drawback is that white is allowed a central expansion with c3 and d4 and the resulting structure will give white more space, superior piece activity and better attacking chances. 3...d6: Steinitz Defense: The Steinitz is the old way to play against the Spanish. It's seldom played today and for a very good reason. d6 is a passive way to defend e5, similar to the Philidor. It blocks in the f8 bishop meaning that black will not have an active way to develop, and it also pins the c6 knight! On first glance, the move makes no sense at all. 3...g6, Fianchetto Defense: The Fianchetto, playing 3...g6, is a sound opening. Unlike the Cozio, which black could choose to transpose to, this is more like a hypermodern defense or a Hippo setup. The downside is that white has a variety of options, the best of which is to take on c6, inflicting structural damage and c3, d4, expanding in the center and gaining space. 0:00 Introduction 01:40 Schliemann Defense 12:56 Berlin Defense 28:22 Classical Variation 42:05 Bird Defense 55:20 Cozio Defense 01:07:37 Steinitz Defense 01:18:17 Fianchetto Defense
