Building the World’s Most Powerful Radio Telescope - Gregg Hallinan - 11/07/2025

What does the sky look like in radio light? What will we learn about stars, galaxies, and black holes using the DSA, a revolutionary new radio telescope being built in the remote Nevada desert? Join us for a 30-minute lecture about radio astronomy followed by a panel Q&A consisting of several astrophysicists to answer your questions about astronomy and space science. Timestamps and description below: 00:00 Announcements 7:34 Introduction to Presenter 10:03 Radio Telescope Presentation 48:10 Radio Telescope Q&A 48:28 "What science questions will you answer with this telescope?" 51:33 "Can you renew old radio telescopes with new computational backends?" 52:56 "Why are GPUs useful for these radio telescopes?" 55:22 Intermission 1:02:06 Q&A Panel Introductions 1:04:52 "How can a radio telescope see black holes if they swallow the light?" 1:06:25 "Will this telescope search for extraterrestrial life?" 1:07:13 "How do you process the raw radio data to get images?" 1:13:38 "What determines the positions of the individual antennae? Are they random?" 1:15:54 "What frequency band is the DSA measuring?" 1:18:31 "Do you use 21-cm radiation to map the dark matter?" 1:20:43 "Is 21-cm radiation used to measure time or distance to an object?" 1:22:33 "What are Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) and will DSA study them?" 1:23:53 "How can I become an astrophysicist?" 1:25:41 "What are we seeing in radio waves?" 1:31:30 "Do satellites like Starlink pose a problem to radio astronomy?" 1:33:38 "How has your work influence how you think about the meaning of life?" 1:38:33 "How will the DSA measure magnetic fields in space?" 1:40:35 "Can radio telescopes obesrve during the day?" 1:41:11 "Will DSA data made available to the public?" 1:41:54 "What are the one billion radio sources you will detect with DSA?" 1:43:33 "Does DSA look at the spectrum of radiation or one frequency at a time?" 1:45:15 "How did you design this low noise amplifier that enables this telescope?" 1:47:02 "Are cuts to federal funding of science affecting this project?" 1:48:32 "What was the criteria for placing the antennae?" 1:49:50 "Can amateur radio astronomers contribute to radio astronomy?" 1:52:25 "Can DSA address the issues of dark energy characterization?" 1:54:10 "How do you filter out manmade sources of radio emission?" 1:56:35 Concluding Remarks Title: Building the World’s Most Powerful Radio Telescope Lecturer: Gregg Hallinan Abstract: Caltech is developing the world's most powerful radio telescope, the Deep Synoptic Array (DSA). Construction will begin in 2026 in a remote radio-quiet valley in Nevada. 1,650 dishes, each 20-ft (6.15m) in diameter will be deployed across a 12.5 x 10 mile area. Signals will be transmitted via underground fiber-optic cables and combined in a central supercomputer, or “radio camera,” that will process data at a rate of 200 Tb/s, comparable to the total internet traffic in the United States. This unprecedented capability will produce a movie of the changing sky as seen through radio waves. It will enable the detection of one billion new radio sources, a hundred times more than all previous radio telescopes combined. The DSA-2000 is expected to drive discoveries across radio astronomy, including identifying exotic neutron stars, mapping the cosmic web, tracking the formation and evolution of galaxies and supermassive black holes over cosmic time, and detecting the stretching and squeezing of the very fabric of the Universe.
