O'Riordan: Variations on a Ground Bass

Kirk O'Riordan, saxophone Holly Roadfeldt, piano Feb. 1 2026 Williams Center for the Arts Lafayette College Variations combines elements of the traditional Theme and Variations form with those of classical minimalism. The references to Philip Glass’s music should be reasonably obvious, but there are also allusions to other composers as well—David Maslanka, Henry Purcell, and Modest Mussorgsky among them. There is no “theme” per se, though if pressed I might say that what I label as the first variation introduces the aspects of the piece that undergo variation during the rest of the work. In total, there are six sections in the piece, performed without separation, and separated by a brief interlude.
