The Broncos, Bo Nix's Injury, & How Culture Impacts Change

Welcome to A Psychologist Talks! On today's episode, I tackle an unfortunate pop culture event: the injury of the Denver Broncos' starting quarterback Bo Nix. If you don't follow sports, you might ask, "Who cares... why the heck is a psychology channel talking about this?" Well, welcome to the topics of organizational culture and change management! Tragic as this injury might be for the team and Broncos fans alike, this represents a pivotal moment that tests the resiliency of an organization's culture and the people who are subjected to it. Why? Well, if pre-existing culture is anywhere from neglected to downright toxic, that culture is going to have an impact on how change is managed. In a perfect world, organizational culture is productive, local team/player culture matches to boot, and those two collide and create a near-seamless transition through change. But what is ideal often isn't reality. I offer both conceptual reflections and some speculation on the Denver Broncos themselves. Obviously, culture ALONE is not going to dictate whether the Broncos can pull out a championship win, especially against an impressive team (it has since been determined who the Broncos are facing). That said, if the culture is poor and this change of QBs is similarly managed poorly: the Broncos don't stand a chance. Just as any organization with a poor culture - sports or otherwise - is doomed to falter or downright fail when change comes a'knockin'.
