Acromegaly(Gigantism) Sign And Symptom Pathophysiology #muhammadumerfarooqbiology #gigantism #acromegaly Gigantism Overview Gigantism, also known as acromegaly when it occurs in adulthood, is a rare hormonal disorder characterized by excessive growth and enlargement of bones and tissues. It is primarily caused by the overproduction of growth hormone (GH) by the pituitary gland, which is located at the base of the brain. In normal circumstances, the pituitary gland releases appropriate amounts of GH to stimulate growth during childhood and adolescence. However, in people with gigantism, there is an abnormal overproduction of GH, usually due to the presence of a benign tumor called pituitary adenoma within the pituitary gland. This tumor produces excess GH, leading to uncontrolled growth. The excessive levels of GH in the body cause certain symptoms and physical changes. These may include: Excessive height: Gigantism is characterized by excessive growth, particularly in the long bones of the body. This can result in an individual growing to be much taller than average. Enlarged hands and feet: The bones and soft tissues in the hands and feet may become enlarged, causing them to appear larger than usual. Facial changes: Over time, the facial features may become more pronounced and enlarged, including the nose, jaw, and forehead. The facial skin may become thickened as well. Increased sweating: Individuals with gigantism may experience excessive sweating due to the increased metabolic activity associated with the condition. Joint pain: Enlarged bones and tissues can lead to joint pain and limited mobility. Organ enlargement: Internal organs, such as the heart, liver, and kidneys, can also be affected and may become enlarged. Gigantism is usually diagnosed through a combination of physical examination, medical history, and hormone level tests. Treatment options typically include surgery, radiation therapy, and medications. The goal of treatment is to reduce GH production and control the symptoms associated with the condition. Early detection and intervention are important to prevent complications and minimize the long-term effects of gigantism CREATED BY:MUHAMMAD UMER FAROOQ EDITED BY:MUHAMMAD UMER FAROOQ VOICE OVER BY:MUHAMMAD UMER FAROOQ DESIGNED BY:MUHAMMAD UMER FAROOQ RESEARCH BY:MUHAMMAD UMER FAROOQ
