Good morning, church! In this opening message of our new sermon series through the Gospel of Matthew, we explore why details matter—in Scripture, in history, and in our own lives. In this message, we lay an important foundation for studying Matthew by examining: Why the Bible includes four Gospels instead of just one The unique focus and audience of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John What makes Matthew distinct as a Gospel written by a Jew to a Jewish audience Why the genealogy of Jesus in Matthew 1 is deeply significant How apparent differences between Matthew and Luke’s genealogies actually strengthen the credibility of Scripture The powerful symbolism behind the structure of Matthew’s genealogy How God uniquely prepared Matthew (Levi the tax collector) for his role in recording this Gospel Far from being a dry list of names, Matthew’s genealogy reveals that Jesus is: The promised Son of David (the royal King) The fulfillment of the covenant through Abraham The long-awaited Messiah We also reflect on how God prepares ordinary people—like Matthew, and like us—for meaningful work in His kingdom. The same God who worked through a multilingual tax collector continues to equip His people today. As we begin this journey through Matthew, may we learn not only to understand the details of Scripture—but to live faithfully in the details of our own calling.
