“The European jazz scene is livelier, more diverse and more creative than ever. Bassist/composer Guus Bakker is a perfect example of this phenomenon. Polder is a remarkable manifestation of the musical mind that is Guus Bakker” - Frank Carlberg “A real contemporary sound exposes wonderful original compositions. Poetic, angular, dark, ethereal, groovy, floating … The freshest sound I have come across for quite a while. Hats off Guus!” - Hein Van de Geyn The basis of the new POLDER quintet, led by versatile bass player Guus Bakker, is the Rotterdam GAP trio, featuring Andreas Suntrop (guitar) and Pim Dros (drums) in addition to Guus. This rhythm section is completed by Nils van Haften (saxophones) and Vincent Veneman (trombone), both of whom are strong soloists and great team players. According to All About Jazz: The music ranges from punchy, groove-focussed numbers such as "Duck & Hide"—with Bakker and Dros in particularly assertive mood—to the straight-ahead swing of "November Rain" and the gentler "Dawn," centered on Van Haften's saxophone and Veneman's warm-toned trombone, and "Twenty Two." When Suntrop ramps up his guitar sound—as he does on "Look A Here" and "Afternoon"—the music takes on a fusion-meets-prog urgency. The catchy "Souldust," co-written by Bakker and Suntrop, is a fine example of the quintet in full flight, flowing melodic lines from sax and trombone over a funky rhythm. http://player.believe.fr/v2/978908178... http://www.guusbakker.com
