This medley, performed by my colleague and friend Lutz Schlosser and me, was recorded on March 29, 2025, in Berlin during the In Circulo event by Peter Wanitschek at the Palast der Künste. It was a day when many things came together: it was my mother’s birthday, I unexpectedly reunited with a longtime friend after many years – and, unbelievably, it was the first time she had ever heard me play live on stage. For Lutz and me, it was a great honor to be invited to this wonderful event for the first time. Ansgar Vollmer, the director of the Westerland Music School, and his dedicated team are, to me, a shining example of how cultural work and music education should be. The evening was filled with heart and compassion, inspiring musical performances, and a profound sense of community. We performed two pieces: The first, Gianni Rassi, was composed by my longtime harmonica brother from Belgium, Steven De Bruyn. Just this February, I recorded this piece for an album together with my colleagues Bill Barrett, Anthony Atherton, and Lutz Schlosser—featuring a unique lineup of diatonic and chromatic harmonicas, baritone saxophone, and electric guitar. This small, simple melody has been with us for a long time, and I am delighted that it is now captured in this video and will soon be honored on our quartet album. The second part of the medley is Flor del Barrio by jazz musician John Zorn. Lutz and I usually perform it with our Trio Tihai, alongside our incredible colleague on the Indian bansuri flute, Claus Rückbeil. We are currently preparing recordings with this trio as well. Flor del Barrio is a beautiful composition full of emotion, which, for me, perfectly reflects the atmosphere of this special evening at the Palast der Künste. www.harmonica-school-berlin.com / @triotihai
