It is victory of the people of Thailand. When somebody set the coup it is not quite such a good thing. They didn't have this (a coup) for 15 years, there's no reason. Fifteen years ago they staged a rebellion without a cause. After 15 years nobody think that somebody will do it like this again, but they did. So the decision by people today is another lesson that good military should see to it." 6. Samak on television screen 7. Various of PPP supporters watching and applauding Samak on the TV at party HQ 8. SOUNDBITE (English) Samak Sundaravej, Leader of People's Power Party: (quoting something the current army chief told him recently) "Even (if) PPP won, even if PPP is the government and even (if) that government dissolve me from the party, I will not stage a coup. I said, 'it's good, thank you for saying that.'" 9. Cutaway of media 10. SOUNDBITE (English) Samak Sundaravej, Leader of People's Power Party: (referring to the 111 executives of Thaksin Shinawatra's old party who were banned from politics for five years earlier this year, including Thaksin himself) "They didn't do anything wrong, and then, if we have opportunity we have amnesty for them." 11. Cutaway of media 12. SOUNDBITE (Thai) Samak Sundaravej, Leader of People's Power Party: "I don't normally call Thaksin, but he called his close contact and he asked him to pass the phone to me and he said to me 'I really congratulate you Samak'" 13. Samak leaving news conference 14. Leader of Democrat Party, Abhisit Vejjajiva, walks through crowd at Democrat Party HQ and waves to supporters 15. Vejjajiva supporters cheer and chant his name 16. SOUNDBITE (English) Abhisit Vejjajiva, Leader of Democrat Party: "At the moment the PPP has won the most number of seats. It has now issued an invitation to all political parties. The Democrat Party has declined that invitation because we think that our ideologies are different and so it remains to be seen how the other parties respond to that invitation. We'll just wait and see." 17. Wide shot of news conference 18. SOUNDBITE (English) Abhisit Vejjajiva, Leader of Democrat Party: "No, no it's really up to them (the other parties) completely. My only advice to them is, do what is best for the country." 19. Abhisit leaving news conference STORYLINE Allies of deposed Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra declared victory in the country's first post-coup election on Sunday, but failed to secure an absolute majority in the parliament according to unofficial results from the Election Commission. A win by the pro-Thaksin People's Power Party is likely to deepen the country's two-year-old political crisis. With 95 percent of the vote counted, the PPP had won 228 seats in the parliament's 480-seat lower house, the Election Commission announced. The rival Democrat Party won 166 seats, it said. PPP's leader Samak Sundaravej told a news conference in Bangkok that Thaksin, who was said to be in Hong Kong, had telephoned to congratulate him after hearing the results. "Thaksin said congratulations," Samak told a news conference, calling on "any political parties" to join PPP to form a coalition government. That prospect has sparked fears of intensified conflict on the already-tense political scene.
