#Rochester #funeralhome #tribute Obituary for Andrea M. Page Andrea (Monsees) Page, age 61, passed away after a difficult battle with breast cancer, on March 5th, 2026. She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Jim Page; four children, Jay (Somer) Page, Chris (Louisa) Page, Alana Page, and Alexa Page; four grandchildren, Nola, Killian, Dinorah, and Orion; mother, Mary Monsees; brother, Pete (Terri) Monsees, sister, Erika (Rusty) Lawrence, and brother, Jerry (Lori) Monsees; brother-in-law John (Sandy) Page, sister-in-law Prudy (John) Lawson, and brother-in-law Jeff Page; including many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Walter Monsees, in January 2007 and brother, Jim Monsees, in July 2016. Andrea was born June 25th, 1964 in Rochester, New York and was the daughter of Walter and Mary (Blackcloud) Monsees. She attended Greece Athena high school before getting her undergraduate degree at St. John Fisher. She then attended Nazareth College and completed her Master’s degree. Although she began teaching at Marion school district, she moved to Spencerport Middle School where she taught 6th grade and eventually retired after teaching for over 30 years. During this time, she began researching the Lakota Code Talkers, a quest spanning at least 20 years, culminating in her advocacy for Congressional gold medals to recognize the honored veterans. Andrea was a proud citizen of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and revered her Hunkpapa Lakota heritage. Following her retirement, she had an impressive career as a Native children’s author, highlighting Native American history, untold stories, and Lakota values. Andrea is a former board member of the Children’s Literature Assembly (CLA) of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and is a longtime member of SCBWI and RACWI. In addition to writing her own work, she created educator guides for publishers and compiled Native book lists for We Need Diverse Books (WNDB). Andrea was a featured speaker at SCBWI Regional events in Pennsylvania and Florida. She enjoyed her role as an instructor at the Highlights Foundation where she mentored other children’s authors. Her first book, Sioux Code Talkers of World War II, was published in March 2017 and quickly sold out of its first printing. As of 2024, it was on its fourth printing. She published her second book Who Was Wilma Mankiller? in September 2025 and was the first Native author to write for the Penguin Workshop Series. While fighting cancer, she finalized work on her third book, Gabriel’s Winter Count, and proudly awaited its publishing in October of 2026. After decades of researching and writing, she left a legacy as a writer, advocate, and educator for Native stories and voices. People were easily drawn to Andrea for her bright and beautiful smile. She was a warm, welcoming friend with a big heart who left an impact on everyone she interacted with. Whether writing devotedly in her office, cooking a family buffet (complete with Post-It note labels), or trying to change the world around her, Andrea was always an intentional and active participant in her life. Her compassion extended to each of her pursuits, and she always put family first. She spoke with passion and candor, leaving no doubts about what was in her heart and on her mind. She enjoyed a variety of sports throughout the years, ranging from at-home Tae-Bo to golf, running, and biking. Her laugh was infectious and frequently in response to rom-com movies like Hitch, Kate & Leopold, Runaway Bride, and the like. In the evenings, she was often found playing Five Crowns (very competitively) or relaxing on the couch watching her shows with her loving husband, Jim. Andrea’s visiting hours will be held on Monday, March 9th from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Walker Brothers Funeral Home (15 West Avenue, Spencerport, NY, 14559). Her memorial mass will be celebrated Tuesday, March 10th at 11:00 am at St. Lawrence’s Church (1000 North Greece Road, Rochester, NY 14626) with a burial to follow at 1:30 pm at Fairfield Cemetery (330 South Union Street, Spencerport, NY 14559). Immediately after the burial will be a Celebration of Life at the Spencerport Fireman’s Exempt Hall (75 South Union Street, Spencerport, NY 14559). --- Please leave messages of comfort at www.walkerbrothersfh.com/tribute/all-services Walker Brothers has been serving Spencerport, Churchville, and the surrounding communities since 1873.
