My goal here is to see relaxed body language, head stays down at bowl, body is pliable and limp as I pick up each foot and trim the hoof. At first, goats find it odd and uncomfortable to have their feet picked up and hooves trimmed; also, there is a reflex to kick when restrained. I am training the goat to understand that letting me do weird stuff to his feet results in grain (when I say "Good!", Molly puts a tiny amount of grain in his bowl). This is our fourth or fifth session, and Anan is doing great. He is not restrained. If he wants to leave, he can do so. If he resists, I try again at an easier level. When I worked on his back left hoof, he was uncomfortable and kicked, so I eventually moved on to the other hooves before returning to the more sensitive foot (I should have done so sooner!). Spending time training voluntary hoof trims at a young age (4-5 sessions around 5-10 minutes each) is a great investment -- you will have a goat that is easy to trim for the rest of his or her life.
