Pochi costruttori hanno il coraggio di commercializzare libere interpretazioni di moto da competizione molto fedeli nell’impostazione a quelle ufficiali. Di solito si cerca di rispettare l’aspetto stilistico, smussando tutti gli spigoli che possono rendere impegnativo l’uso quotidiano, ma questo non è l’approccio di KTM. Nel 2007 la 950 Supermoto R era una moto senza compromessi, poco protettiva e con molte vibrazioni, ma aveva anche una fortissima personalità. I lavori per addomesticarla sono stati ridotti al minimo, come conferma la presenza di un equipaggiamento professionale a cominciare dal motore, il bicilindrico a V della famiglia LC8, che all’epoca era alimentato a carburatori e configurato in modo da esaltare l’erogazione ai bassi regimi di rotazione. Più pesante rispetto a una motard monocilndrica, ma anche decisamente più potente e reattiva, non era una moto per tutti.
