ANAB Webinar: In House Calibrations for Testing Laboratories

In this free webinar, ANAB details the basic concepts of calibration, traceability, and uncertainty in the context of ISO/IEC 17025:2017. This includes pros and cons of doing calibrations in-house versus outsourcing those calibrations. This webinar also goes over general equipment standards and records needed for in-house calibration, staff competence, and some common pitfalls. The presenter then goes through ISO/IEC 17025, clause 6.4, along with some basic concepts, specifically, what is calibration? What is the point of a calibration program? Traceability defined in ISO/IEC 17025, clause 6.5. Metrological traceability is defined in ISO/IEC Guide 99. ISO/IEC 17025 7.6.1 and 7.6.2 set requirements for uncertainty. The presenter explores the differences between in-house and outsourced calibrations. In-house calibration is not the verification of equipment that testing laboratories perform on a routine basis. This is not the intermediate checks of equipment that are performed as well. In-house calibration is calibration of equipment, supporting tests and measurements on the scope of accreditation. It is ensuring that the equipment is functioning properly, and then it meets the intended needs of the equipment. There are some clear pros of in-house calibrations can come with a reduction of costs, minimize downtime, ensure quality. There are some cons of in-house calibrations though, including available reference equipment and reference standards, record keeping, competence of personnel, and conformance to requirements, some of which can increase costs. The webinar then outlines the potential steps for bringing calibrations in-house but notes that each laboratory or organization should evaluate their own risk before deciding how to proceed. Reverence vs. working standards are explored, along with reference materials (RMs) and certified reference materials (CRMs). NIST SRMs (standard reference materials) are also defined. A general calibration process it outlined, just as an example. It is up to the laboratory themselves to determine which calibration process is right for them. A calibration label allows users of equipment to readily identify the status of the calibration or the period of validity. The presenter outlines the areas of risk to consider when thinking of in-house calibrations, including: • Metrological traceability • Personnel competence • Record keeping • Resource availability At the end of this webinar, questions were asked by attendees and answered by the presenters. These included: Does ANAB allow for in-house calibrations for ISO/IEC 17025 accredited testing labs? Do you have to be accredited to perform an in-house calibration? Would competence records for calibrating personnel refer to annual proficiency testing, for example? Does ANAB consider the tuning process of a GC-MS as a calibration? Would a lab have to obtain a separate accreditation for calibration to perform their own calibration or could it be added to a forensic lab’s scope? Can you define the difference between calibration and validation more clearly? Does ANAB consider the one-point calibration usually listed in equipment manufacturer manuals as an in-house calibration or is that considered an “adjustment?” At what point does the intermediate check result become a point of concern requiring immediate calibration? What are the classes of reference vs. working weights? Is there a detailed ANAB course for uncertainty budgets? Do you have any general tips/info on how this applies to digital forensics? Does ANAB offer training for in-house calibrations? Is proficiency testing necessary for in-house calibration for testing laboratories? Can you provide an example of the uncertainty calculation for in-house calibrations? What are the specific requirements to establish traceability for in-house calibration? How can we determine the intervals for in-house calibration and intermediate checks? What is the difference between calibration and verification? How do you conduct glassware calibration or verification? What is the difference between Class A and Class F weights? When defining a calibration interval does ISO/IEC 17025 have a suggested method?
