El Anatsui é um dos mais aclamados artistas contemporâneos africanos, cujas obras figuram em um número surpreendente de grandes coleções de Berlim a Nova Iorque e a Tóquio. Professor de escultura, ele trabalhou com uma ampla variedade de meios de comunicação e inventou novos, incluindo fantasias cintilantes de objetos encontrados, que ele descreve como "panos de metal" para honrar sua inspiração nos têxteis ganenses. Anatsui frequentemente insiste que "a destruição é uma condição necessária para o renascimento" e ainda rejeita a violência do iconoclasta, decretada por uma série de artistas modernos de Picasso a Damien Hirst. Por quê? Esta palestra segue o arco da carreira de Anatsui para sondar as políticas carregadas de história e perda para os artistas de cor. Next Thursday, 7/28, at 4:00pm ECT, we will have the next lecture of the NEANE Lecture Series, entitled: El Anatsui: The Reluctant Iconoclast. El Anatsui is one of the most acclaimed of African contemporary artists, whose works feature in an astonishing number of major collections from Berlin to New York to Tokyo. A professor of sculpture, he has worked in a wide range of media and has invented new ones, including shimmering concoctions of found objects, which he describes as “metal cloths” to honor their inspiration in Ghanaian textiles. Anatsui often insists that “destruction is a necessary condition for rebirth” and yet rejects the violence of the iconoclast, enacted by a host of modern artists from Picasso to Damien Hirst. Why? This talk follows the arc of Anatsui’s career to probe the fraught politics surrounding history and loss for artists of color.
