Last year (2017), the State of Rhode Island made it illegal for a licensed medical professional to counsel a child away from the desire to change his/her gender identity (as well as homosexual desires). The bill, known as the "Conversion Therapy Ban," passed with near unanimous support from both chambers of the Rhode Island General Assembly; it specifically states that it is illegal for any licensed mental health professional to engage in "conversion therapy" which is defined as: "any practices or treatments that seek to change an individual's sexual orientation or gender identity, including efforts to change behaviors or gender expressions or to eliminate or reduce sexual or romantic attractions or feelings toward individuals of the same gender." This means that an eight year old boy, who may be confused about his gender and identifies as a female, may not receive professional medical help that affirms his male identity and dissuades him from continuing down a road of "transitioning" his gender. Yet, it remains legal to inject that same child with hormone blockers and cross-sex hormones. Additionally, Rhode Island public schools are currently deciding how to implement statewide transgender policies that would open up bathrooms, locker rooms, and sports teams to anyone who claims to be the opposite gender from their biological sex. Dr. Michelle Cretella addresses this growing phenomenon in this week's talk titled "Switching Sexes? The Transgender Agenda." Dr. Cretella is President of the American College of Pediatricians. In this one hour presentation, Dr. Cretella will explain the scientific truth about sex and gender identity, and the beginnings of transgender belief in medicine. She also shares stories of families from across the country who have been harmed by this ideology. Finally, she presents authentic loving and merciful ways to protect all children. This talk was held at St. Pius V in Providence, RI. Dr. Cretella is the President of the American College of Pediatricians (ACPeds). She was elected to the ACPeds Board of Directors in 2005. Prior to being elected President in 2015, Dr. Cretella chaired the Adolescent Sexuality Committee, Psychosocial Development Committee, and Scientific Policy Committee. In these roles she became one of the ACPeds chief researchers, writers and spokespersons. She is regularly consulted by Breitbart News, FRC, One News Now, Relevant Radio, FOX News and many others. Her article Gender Dysphoria in Children and Suppression of Debate was published in the 2016 summer issue of the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Cretella serves on the Advisory Board of the Alliance for Therapeutic Choice, and was a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association for Research and Therapy for Homosexuality (NARTH) from 2010-2015. Dr. Cretella received her medical degree in 1994 from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. She completed her internship and residency in pediatrics in 1997 at the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford, Connecticut. She completed a fellowship in College Health through the University of Virginia in 1999. Dr. Cretella practiced pediatrics with a special interest in behavioral health in Rhode Island and Connecticut for 17 years. She left clinical practice in 2012 to devote more time to her four children and her work with the American College of Pediatricians.
