DISCLAIMER: I own none of this, sound/images, whatever. All royalties and monies where they are due, etc. Sibelius is the scoring program, everything else the most basic of image manipulation. PDF available at https://tinyurl.com/RNSDSBass Ritual took on a life of its own in performance, and over the years (decades!) new bits were added and other bits were extended and improvised more. In post-vinyl times there are now mixes and reissues with extra bars during the bass solo and percussion sections, but I’ve scored only what was in the original issue. Apologies for inevitable inaccuracies. As usual there is a compromise between technique and notation. Grace notes might be mini-glissandi, or hammered-on. With other glissandi, sometimes a note is definitely being articulated, yet the finger is sliding on the string (around 10:12). All guitar parts scored sound an octave higher. Tempo marks are always approximate. Time sigs: sometimes I’ve scored just the sig for the bass, sometimes what the rest of the band is doing. You’ll hear I nicked the opening from the ‘Yesshows’ Ritual. 3:50-4:06 – Best guess; echo and fuzzy tone 4:18-5:35 – The bridging solo for guitar is far less rubato than it feels (which is often the case with Yes, I’ve found), but obviously how Steve plays gives the cue to the bass to move those long tremolo notes 5:40-6:52 – ‘Nous Sommes du Soleil’ - Chris loves to syncopate a figure. All the note values are pretty short, so I’ve lengthened some for tidiness, but also added some conductor marks for some of the crotchet beats in case you get lost. 11:16-12:16 – time sig taken from what the second bass is doing 12:15-13:22 – A bit of guesswork for the second bass, which is sometimes very low in the mix. 12:23 – the solo is basically in 4/4, so there are phrasing lines to assist. The pdf linked above has a 4/4 version on its final page, which might be easier to read 14:22 - D♯ is definitely being played even though instinct might suggest D♮ 16:19 – there is a definite slowing of tempo for the timpani, but I suspect the crotales/cimbales (or whatever they are) stay at the same speed. 17:06 – this guitar bridging cadenza definitely counts to the 3/4 coming out of the percussion section, but I sweated over it and no doubt got note values wrong. 17:37-19:56 – a lot of what Chris plays in the ‘Nous Sommes’ reprise is very quiet indeed; the x-headed notes are ghosts rather than damped. 20:25 – I suspect the end of this bar is a strummed fumble 20:47 – that C♯ is there in some mixes, but I rather suspect it’s been corrected to C♮ in this audio. God forbid choirboy Chris should hit a blue note, but I think it works both ways.
