Visit Bonaventure Island for its puffin colony if weather permits. Enjoy great seafood and photo ops. Gaspé Peninsula Coastal Route (Route 132): One of Canada’s best motorcycle roads, hugging the sea for over 700 km. Don’t miss the breathtaking panorama from Mont-Saint-Pierre’s viewpoint. Forillon National Park: Offers cliffs, coves, and the Cap-Bon-Ami lookout. A short hike leads to views of sea bird colonies and possibly seals. Matane–Godbout Ferry: A relaxing cross-St. Lawrence ferry ride with whale sightings. It breaks up the ride and saves highway miles. Reserve ahead in peak season. Manic-5 (Daniel-Johnson Dam): A jaw-dropping engineering marvel, the tallest multiple-arch dam in the world. The ride up Route 389 is full of twisties through wilderness. Plan for a ~6 hour round-trip from Baie-Comeau and fuel up beforehand. Guided tours are available in summer, and there’s a visitor center with fascinating history. • Saguenay Fjord & Tadoussac: Crossing the free ferry at Tadoussac is a mini-adventure. Whale-watch from a zodiac tour or viewpoints like Cap-de-Bon-Désir. Even from the ferry, you might see whales or belugas feeding at the fjord’s meeting with the sea. • Lac Saint-Jean region: Enjoy beautiful lake views and cultural sites. Val-Jalbert Historic Village near Chambord is a must – a ghost town from 1927 with preserved buildings and a thundering waterfall. Try local blueberries or tourtière du Lac-Saint-Jean for an authentic taste. • Route 155 (Saint-Maurice River): This route offers over 100 km of sweeping curves alongside the stunning Saint-Maurice River canyon. It’s pure riding bliss and avoids busy highways. Highly recommended for two-wheel enthusiasts. • Beauce Region & Saint-Victor: Enjoy rolling hills and farmland. The Hotel Route 66 in Saint-Victor is an attraction for motorcyclists with its Route 66 theme, decor, and biker-friendly amenities. Nearby, Saint-Georges offers more restaurants and shops. Preparation & Riding Tips: • Rain Gear and Waterproofing: Pack a quality rain suit, waterproof gloves, and boot covers. Use waterproof luggage or dry bags for your clothes and gear. Consider waterproof panniers or rain covers; it’s hard to recover on a multi-day trip when you’re drenched. Wear quick-dry clothing layers that you can easily wash and dry overnight. • Packing Light (Especially for Slingshot riders): Space in a Polaris Slingshot is limited. Pack only the essentials and use soft duffels that can squish into compartments. Don’t overpack; it can be cumbersome and affect your bike’s handling. Plan to do laundry every 5-7 days. • Border Crossing & Documents: If you plan to enter the US, ensure you have your passport and necessary travel documents. Check the latest border rules regarding food, cannabis, firearms, etc. Crossing into Maine saved us time, but time it when the small rural crossing is open. Verify the operating hours of your intended border crossing. • Enjoy the Ride: Lastly, remember that unexpected situations are part of the adventure! We hit freak storms and had some plans rained out, but those turned into stories and bonding moments. If you’re replicating a journey like this, build in a little extra time so you can be flexible. Stop for that beautiful sunset, detour to that quirky roadside attraction, or wait out a storm with good company. The long way round truly is about the journey, not just the destination. Eight days, four provinces/states, countless memories – our motorcycle/Slingshot trek to ECIC 2025 had it all. This script captures our experience, but your journey will be uniquely your own. We hope these stories and tips inspire you to plan your own two-(or three) wheeled adventure. Until the next ride, keep the rubber side down and enjoy the open road! 🏁
