EDIT: here’s a follow up video of the duo, now featuring overhead shots: • Railfanning the Essex County Turtle Back Z... Title says it all! Sorry for the long wait. Life has been keeping me busy lately, both at work and at home. With 306 now back in service since the end of May and 382 now being serviced since the beginning of June, this video marks the first time that 199 and 306 have operated together since July of 2020. Since 1999, these two locomotives have tirelessly pulled hundreds of trains for millions of passengers since the day they were brand new, though their time together has been less frequent since 382's arrival back in 2015. One of the better events during their time together was when the two switched train colors in July 2020, an event that hasn’t happened since. This was the last time they would run together before 199 went down to begin its overhaul, which was partially completed back in August of that year. But the two would not run with each other again for some time due to several undisclosed issues, one which restricted the railroad to only one run train until the installation of new signals. By the time the new signal system was activated in November 2021, 199 began the remainder of its overhaul which didn’t finish until September 2023. Afterwards, 306 went down in November of that year and returned to service on May 29, 2024. I’m more than certain that the two locomotives are enjoying their time running together again! This short video compiles all the video clips I took of the railroad on July 5, 2024. I was hoping to make this a longer video, but as I was making my way back to the parking garage, 306 was taken out of service for the day due to attendance going down, so these five clips will have to do for now (better than nothing though). Since 199’s overhaul has made it more powerful compared to before, it is now able to pull the complete red train without major issues. Therefore, it was the most logical sense to attach 199 to the red train and allow 306 to pull the blue train. Aside from the red train now having five cars, the lack of the 1863 Indian head on 199’s old cars (thanks a lot to whoever forced us to remove them), and 199 itself now spotting deer antlers and a slightly different paint scheme, this is a big throwback to the 1999–2015 era of Turtle Back Zoo railroading, and I am getting a bit nostalgic just looking at these two locomotives running together again, even though I never saw 199 in action until 2014. Not sure how long 382 is going to be down for, but it will be a while before it returns, so check this duo out while you can! Also, big shoutout to all the engineers in this video for the friendly waves and whistle salutes! This video also comes with a big announcement; July 2024 marks ten years since I made my very first Turtle Back Zoo Railroad video! This railroad has always been a big part of my childhood since my first visit, especially since becoming a driver, so it’s no surprise that it’s one of the most covered areas on this channel. I’m still making plans for the big video to celebrate my ten years of Turtle Back Zoo Railfanning, but it will more than likely contain all my favorite moments during my time here at the zoo. The video will be out by the beginning of next year after the 2024 season ends, and I promise that it be an epic way to celebrate, so please stay tuned! With that said, enjoy the video! PS: caution tape was present on the first car of the red train due to one of the benches being broken. It was fixed a few days later.
