This song is a very fast (158 bpm) blues progression. In fact, it's so fast that I had to cheat a little and play it at 90% of its original speed to have a better shot at performing the licks cleanly. (Even so, I messed up some parts a bit :)). This is slightly shorter version of the original recording, I chose arguably the best licks to accommodate the backing track ("naked vamp") provided by Steve Vai himself on his channel: • Jibboom (Naked) Even if you have to take this at a slower tempo first, it's a great song to learn for rock guitar chops. Learn this song well and you’ll have a good grasp of basically all rock guitar techniques! Jibboom features virtually all rock guitar techniques: bends (and more advanced bends such as gradual bends, prebends, unison bends etc), different types of vibrato (and vibrato bar use), rakes, muffled strings and percussive funk “scratching”, palm muting, lots of legato playing with hammer-ons and pull-offs and slides, sweep picking, pick scrapes, trills, tapping and even various types of harmonics (natural and artificial or “pinch” harmonics and touched “harp” harmonics). Other motivating factor to learn the song is that it's in the guitar-friendly key of E and follows the familiar I-IV-V (E-A-B) chord changes from countless other songs. Thus stopping and thinking while you are learning these licks will serve well in easy integration into your other playing (jamming, improvisation etc.). In other words, what you are learning can be very usable in many musical situations. Some performance tips that I learned while practicing this: • Keep your fingernails short to avoid any unnecessary friction between your fingers (the goal is finger independence). Also, be aware of sweat forming between fingers and whether that affects your speed negatively. You might prefer washing your hands with soap and drying them properly before playing this up to speed. This song is ultra-fast and its best to optimize so that there is as little tension between the fingers as possible. • To develop finger independence (so that your fingers dont cling together and jeopardize speed), try practicing the sextuplet theme licks with your fret hand thumb also behind the neck, while for performance it will be mostly bend over the neck “Hendrix-style”. • Play the song with strength and aggression, pick hard on the pinch harmonics and palm muted parts! • Start slowly and gradually increase speed with a metronome (duh!). According to Steve, "each note must have its own zip code". Well said. Steve Vai's short lesson of the song: • Steve Vai - "Jibboom Lesson" - Steve Vai G... I highly recommend Wolf Marshall's book Ultra Zone Signature Licks, which will give you further insights into playing this and other songs from the album. I excerpted little snippets that I consider under fair use policy.
