WATCH: A sommelier's tips for how to taste wine

Javia Gilliam-Sanford decided to explore the world of wine after working at a big box liquor company, though it became clear there wasn't much diversity in the wine industry. “The ultimate reason why I got into wine is because you really don't see Black women in this space,” she told PBS News’ Gabrielle Hays. Out of about 11,600 wineries in the U.S., fewer than 1 percent are Black-owned, according to the Association of African American Vintners. Now a sommelier and self-described “cool somm,” Gilliam-Sandford has sought to make the culture of wine more accessible to her community in St. Louis.
