If your AC dies in a Las Vegas summer… you’re done. I tried to save money by buying my own rooftop AC unit and having it professionally installed. Turns out, no HVAC company will install a customer-supplied unit. So now I have a $7,000 paperweight… unless I install it myself. What followed was a full-blown rooftop fabrication experiment: • Building a custom curb for a 22.5° pitched roof • Converting side-draft to down-draft • Learning (again) that I’m terrible at bending sheet metal • Aircraft rivets, sealant, and questionable decisions • Lifting an AC onto a roof without dropping it (or myself) • Discovering major duct failures in the attic • Accidentally fixing what may have been our biggest airflow issue This project was frustrating, messy, and absolutely not the “right” way to do it… but it worked. Total cost? Just under $8,000. Still painful. Still cheaper than emergency summer replacement in Vegas.
