Changemakers are always the consumers and you the birth doulas can contribute to the improvements to our maternity care system by influencing your clients top speak up about what they do and don't want and why. Back in the 1970's women insisted on their husbands being in attendance to prevent atrocities from occurring because he was standing by as witness and make women feel protected. Never did a Dr say "oh I think you should have your husband come along" until it was extremely obvious that's exactly what women wanted and then of course they bent toward consumer preference. So always encourage your client to identify hat they do want and ask for it. Especially rural clients as they are the ones who miss out on services the most. Rural clients should be attending the Country Women's Association Meetings and voicing their opinions about maternity care in rural areas, they are the most effective lobbyists for women for change in rural areas. Women in rural areas have been so underserviced for such a long time they are used to being neglected and missing out. It's time for that to change!
