Why isn't there a tidal tsunami every day at Gibraltar?

The Atlantic is very wide and has a huge tidal range, meaning that a great mass of water rises there twice a day. The Mediterranean is by comparison very small, with very little tidal range. The two are connected by the narrow Strait of Gibraltar. One might imagine that the deluge of water would be spectacular, and yet all seems fairly calm. How can this be? Yes, it is a bit annoying that the light in the background fluctuates. So much for its 'candle' setting.
