In this video, we demonstrate the use of MPI within the EFDC+ Explorer Modeling System (EEMS) to significantly improve run times, sometimes by as much as 15x or more, depending on the model and hardware configurations. We introduce a test case model developed for the Chesapeake Bay, which includes approximately 204,000 horizontal cells and four vertical layers, simulating salinity as the primary constituent. We walk through the process of running a single domain, single-threaded model, highlighting key inputs such as the number of physical cores and logical processes. We encourage viewers to follow along as I show how to set up and run the model effectively.
