During the fall of 2014, Norfolk Southern began the implantation of a new dispatching tool called 'autorouter'. It's beginnings proved to be the bane of the dispatchers in the Harrisburg, PA area, as trains began parking on mainlines and sidings while personnel tried to figure out the best option. At the same time, a large derailment in Altoona in late-September sent the railroad scrambling to move traffic in some way, creating even more of a headache. In order to alleviate some of this congestion, NS responded by re-routing several of its less priority trains, particularly oil empties, away from an Altoona-Pittsburgh-Cleveland route, to a southern route via Hagerstown-Roanoke-Bluefield, using a combination of the Lurgan Branch, H Line and Christiansburg District. This video is a compilation of several detoured empty oil trains on the NS Lurgan Branch in October/November 2014. Due to the normal routing of these trains over NS's Port Road branch to the refineries, no foreign units are seen, but a wide variety of older and newer NS units are seen at various locations on the Lurgan Branch. So, sit back and enjoy detoured oil trains on the NS Lurgan Branch. Enjoy, subscribe and thanks for watching!!
