An unidentified assailant detonated an explosive device next to a patrol vehicle in Moscow early Tuesday, killing himself and a police officer and leaving two other officers injured, officials said. According to Associated Press the attack occurred shortly after midnight near Savyolovsky Train Station in the Russian capital’s downtown area, according to Moscow’s branch of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia. Russia’s Investigative Committee spokeswoman Svetlana Petrenko said the assailant approached a traffic police vehicle and detonated an explosive device, killing one officer at the scene and injuring two others, who were hospitalized. The Investigative Committee has launched a probe into the attack. Petrenko did not provide information about the assailant’s possible motives or further details. “The identity of the man who detonated the explosive device and other persons possibly involved is being established, witnesses are being questioned, and CCTV footage is being reviewed,” Petrenko said.
