Testing recommended for anyone with mumps-like symptoms

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - There are new concerns about the mumps in the local community. A number of confirmed cases are showing up even beyond the college campus where they were first reported. The University of Cincinnati first began notifying students of at least two unrelated confirmed cases of the mumps before the end of the school year. At the time, they asked for anyone with flu-like symptoms to be tested for the mumps and to check vaccinations. This second advisory went out this week. It says they've now confirmed a faculty member and two additional cases of the mumps. Again, those do not appear to be related. On Wednesday, Local 12 spoke with preventive health specialists on UC's campus who say what this shows is that mumps is in the local community. Because it is highly contagious with close contact, they again want people to check that vaccinations and be vigilant for symptoms that can lead to serious complications. “We are calling this an outbreak now, because there are at least three confirmed cases, and it's important because it's person to person know, that we have mumps in our community, but if you have swelling in the cheeks or jaw area, that people check immunizations and call their provider,” said Dr. Victoria Wulsin of Preventive Medicine & Global Health. “It does affect the testes, causing orchitis and that can be very serious for men both in terms of penile function and fertility, so that's one of the main concerns and why we want to prevent this disease.” Mumps is spread like any other virus. That means usually by saliva or mucous from your mouth, nose or throat. You can infect others by coughing, sneezing and sharing cups, as well as through intimate contact, and even touching surfaces, without washing your hands. Your doctor can test for mumps and tell you if your immunizations are up to date. University Health Services is still inviting students and staff to report "mumps-like" symptoms to university health services for testing on campus.
