Ashland’s growth has been fast but the city’s success is starting to expose its biggest weaknesses. Transit is overwhelmed. Buses are stuck in traffic, bus routes overlap, and moving between Birch Heights and Ashlyn heights is almost impossible. The transit department has been adding more and more buses for each route but for a city this dense, that’s not sustainable. Healthcare isn’t keeping up either. Ashland still doesn’t have a full hospital, so when emergencies happen, people leave the city for treatment. That’s not how a growing regional center should operate. The council’s solution is ambitious: build a new subway line to connect the two busiest districts, finally giving Ashland a transit backbone. Alongside that, construct the city’s first major hospital, a facility built to handle the scale Ashland’s reached. But we can’t stop there.
