The expansion of Rome into the eastern Mediterranean brought the Roman Republic, and later the Roman Empire, into direct contact with the powerful kingdoms of the Near East. These included states such as the Seleucid Empire, the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt, the Kingdom of Armenia, the Nabataean Kingdom, and the Parthian Empire. During the second and first centuries BC, Rome gradually extended its influence across Asia Minor, Syria, and the Levant through diplomacy, warfare, and political alliances. Local kings often ruled as client monarchs under Roman supervision, maintaining their thrones while recognizing Roman authority. Figures such as Mithridates VI of Pontus challenged Roman expansion and sparked major conflicts, while other rulers, including Herod the Great in Judaea, governed their territories with Roman support.
