Artwork Info: Title: Untitled (Figure Between Chairs) Artist: Stephen Duren Medium: Oil pastel Object ID: 2017.0808 Audio Transcription: Born in 1948 in northern California, Stephen Duren enlisted in the U.S. Navy at 19 years old. After 4 years of his service, he then lived in Europe and this is when art peaked his interest. Duren saw an exhibition of paintings of Van Gogh, which he then refers to “a religious experience”, at just 23 years old. Immediately after, he started school at San Francisco Art Institute (BFA) and Sacramento State University (MA). Duren says, “The streets of San Francisco paid my tuition. I was one of that city’s first licensed street artists.” In this oil pastel drawing, there are two chairs in this artwork, both of which seem to be on fire. There is a nude child-like figure between the chairs represented with its hands crossed - covering its groin. The child appears guilty, ashamed, and vulnerable from the situation.
