And a very good example of such automatization would undoubtedly be the exchange of tools. With FERMAT machines, we have two possible options. The first is an automatic tool changer, or just an ATC. It is a more conventional way of exchange and is popular mainly because it is so easy to operate and easy to adjust. As a standard the ATC is able to exchange tools only into horizontal position - into the spindle of the headstock. However, as an option, the ATC can be adapted also for vertical exchange, where the whole arm tips by 90 degrees. Here it is possible to change tools into automatic heads with a spindle in a vertical position, straight down. The ATC magazine can store from 20 to 120 tools, but usually no more than 60. The maximum tool weight ATC can carry is 25 kg, the max. length is 400 mm and the max. diameter the magazine can take is 250 mm. For more than 60 tools, KUKA or FANUC robot is more convenient choice. Robot is faster, it can exchange tools in under 30 seconds. It can manipulate with heavier and longer tools - max. tool weight is 50 kg, max. tool diameter is 300 mm and the max. length is 500 mm as a standard,. The tool rack of the robot can take up either 96, 125, or 189 tools, yet the rack is easily adjustable. Robot moves in 6 axes, so it is more versatile in movement - of course it can do the exchange into the spindle of the headstock and also into the milling head - both in horizontal and vertical position.
