On November 18th, 1978, more than 900 members of the Peoples Temple died in a remote settlement called Jonestown, located in the jungles of Guyana. Led by American preacher Jim Jones, the group had relocated there in search of a so-called utopian society. What they encountered instead was total control, armed surveillance, and growing paranoia. The tragedy unfolded when Jones ordered his followers to drink a cyanide-laced beverage. Entire families died together—children among the victims. Recordings from that day include Jones insisting that death was their only option, describing it as a “revolutionary act.” However, survivors and investigators argue that many were coerced or physically forced, calling into question whether it was truly a mass suicide or, in fact, mass murder.
