In this lecture, we explore Week 2 of the course “Design Practices for Intelligent Product Design.” This session focuses on Concept Generation and the TRIZ (Theory of Inventive Problem Solving) methodology, which provides a systematic approach to engineering innovation and problem solving. The lecture introduces the role of concept design in the New Product Development (NPD) process, highlighting how designers transform user needs and design requirements into innovative engineering solutions. We discuss different approaches to concept generation, including intuitive methods such as brainstorming and directed innovation methods such as TRIZ and axiomatic design. A major part of the lecture explains the TRIZ methodology developed by Genrich Altshuller, including the concepts of technical contradictions, physical contradictions, and the TRIZ contradiction matrix. We also explore several TRIZ inventive principles, which help engineers systematically generate creative solutions to complex design problems.
