Toi tu te whenua, Ngaro atu te tangata People come and go but the land remains WAI from New Zealand and EcoSono Ensemble performed a US tour in the fall of 2018, performing at the Technosonics Festival in Virginia and for the opening of the Ent Center in Colorado. Māori electronica roots group WAI are from New Zealand/Aotearoa. They have created an original contemporary style of music by fusing current sounds and technology with traditional Māori music forms - ominous grooves laid down by lopsided programmed beats made from traditional Māori poi percussion, body slaps and natural noises with Polynesian-related chants and harmonies. The musical background for melodies are based on traditional haka (dance) and waiata tawhito (ancient songs). There is little to latch onto other than voices and rhythms; the feeling is of being drawn into something ancient and deep. WAI make full and inventive use of the latest technology; this is no historic re-creation. The result is a sound that’s as soulful and funky as any modern R&B, while sounding not remotely like it. There’s a bold sparseness to the sound and a refusal to resort to pop cliches. The EcoSono Ensemble creates interactive earth music with a collective of diverse musicians, artists, scientists and activists from around the globe. As a branch of the EcoSono Institute, this ensemble employs improvisation and composition as a multidimensional activity integrating ecoacoustics, technology, environmental exploration, cross-disiplinary collaborations, cultural exchange and environmental activism into virtuosic instrumental electro acoustic and vocal performance. Pursuing commonalities between interdisciplinary music creation and ecological awareness, EcoSono often blurrs the lines between installation, field research and performance. They are equally at home performing in deep forests, wind-swept shores, urban landscapes, galleries and clubs, and in the finest concert halls across the globe. “Ehara, taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa, takitini” - My strength is not of an individual, but that of the collective.
