Step into the ancient North with this Viking Edda honoring Harald “Bluetooth,” the Danish king who united tribes, carved his faith in stone, and faced a tragic end at the hands of his own son. This song blends poetic saga style with atmospheric Norse imagery. Below you will find the full English lyrics, followed by the historical story of Harald Bluetooth. Blue-toothed king, Harald calls the breeze, Old Danish blood runs wild through the trees. Fjords awake with the warrior’s might, Ocean and thunder sing through the night. Among the Danish hills, dark pines would bow, Tribes by their fires guarded their vow. But came a king who stepped on the shore, Gathered the broken, made them one once more. On anvils rang the will of the land, Swords rose high at Harald’s command. One banner lifted the people as one, Like rising storm when the battle is won. Blue-toothed king, Harald calls the breeze, Old Danish blood runs wild through the trees. Fjords awake with the warrior’s might, Ocean and thunder sing through the night. Stars shine bright above the king’s command, A new path rises across his land. Runes are carved with his faith’s embrace, Jelling stone stands, guarding time and place. Temples were quiet with old gods’ breath, Sacred groves whispered of life and death. But in Harald’s heart a new flame stirred, A sign of light in a world long blurred. Priests crossed over the Danish ground, Warriors listened without a sound. Two worlds met where he chose to stand, Carved their union in stone and sand. Stars shine bright above the king’s command, A new path rises across his land. Blue-toothed king, fate whispers low, Winds tear your cloak where the cold pines grow. Warrior’s blood stains the fading light, Your son’s blade ends the long night. Ring-forts circled the land like ancient beasts, Silent guardians of victories and feasts. Yet shadows thickened and treason grew, The wolf you had raised now turned on you. Svend, wild-hearted, lifted his steel, Blood of the father he no longer could feel. Harald fell as the dusk turned red, With him dimmed the flame the Danes once led. Blue-toothed king, fate whispers low, Winds tear your cloak where the cold pines grow. Harald Bluetooth, son of Gorm the Old and Queen Thyra, ruled Denmark in the 10th century. At the time, the land was divided among rival clans and chieftains. Harald’s greatest achievement was unifying these scattered tribes into a single kingdom, a deed recorded on the monumental Jelling runestones. Through strategy, diplomacy, and force, he also extended Danish influence into parts of Norway, stabilizing the region under his authority. His reign saw the construction of perfectly engineered ring-forts such as Trelleborg and Aggersborg, symbols of centralized power and military precision. Harald adopted Christianity, a decision with both spiritual and political significance, reducing the risk of German invasion and integrating Denmark into Christian Europe. This conversion is immortalized on the larger Jelling stone, where he declared that he “made the Danes Christian.” Yet Harald’s power created enemies. Traditionalists resisted his reforms, and conflicts grew within the royal court. Ultimately, his own son, Svend Forkbeard, rebelled against him. Their struggle culminated in Harald’s fall around 987, either from wounds or exile. Though overthrown, Harald Bluetooth’s legacy endured through his unification of Denmark, his monumental constructions, and his lasting place in Norse history.
