From the rare 1990 Legendary Masters Series cd The Best of Jan & Dean, here is Take 7B of "Batman." The liner notes say it was the last single recorded by Jan & Dean. It also appeared on the 1996 two-disc cd collection All The Hits From Surf City To Drag City but was originally on their 1966 album Jan & Dean Meet Batman. The session for it and "Captain Marvel" (on the album as "The Origin of Captain Jan & Dean The Boy Blunder"), was held from 8:30 to 11:30 P.M. on January 13, 1966 at Western Recorders. Jan Berry was the session leader and song arranger. Berry's contractor was drummer Hal Blaine, who booked nine other musicians for the session. They included drummer Earl Palmer and bass players George Callender and Ray Pohlman. On guitars were Glen Campbell, Tommy Tedesco and Donald Peake, who all did 2 doubles playing three guitar tracks, along with Bill Pitman, who played only one guitar track. Larry Knechtel was on keyboard. Sound engineer Henry Lewy also took part. "Batman" was written by Jan Berry, Donald Altfeld and Fred Wieder. Some of the lyrics in Jan & Dean’s “Batman” were the same as in "Batman & Robin" on a Smash label single by The Spotlights around the same time, which was written by Leon Russell, Snuff Garrett and L. Pegues (Lou Courtney). In particular are the lines: "criminals are a cowardly superstitious lot, so my disguise must be able to strike terror into their hearts” and, “I must be a creature of the night.” Jan & Dean’s sounds similar to “The Little Old Lady From Pasadena,” which Altfeld and Berry wrote. The Spotlights' recording of “Batman And Robin” also appeared on the Design Label album The Super Album Of Super Heroes by The Super Dupers. It is on this YouTube channel.
