When Lieutenant Colonel George Custer arrived at the Little Bighorn, Chief Gall and the rest of his people had only a few hours' warning. A seasoned warrior of 36 years of age, Gall had already seen plenty of fighting in his life. He had slain American soldiers and rival warriors to earn his honour as one of the finest warriors of the Hunkpapa Sioux. Gall’s value to his people was so great that Chief Sitting Bull adopted him as a younger brother and counted him among his closest advisors and friends. So, when word of Custer’s arrival reached Sitting Bull’s camp, Gall was among the first to hear about it. He had no idea that this fight would be different. This was a day he’d be remembering and retelling for the rest of his life. Chief Gall was one of the first Native Americans to ever tell the story of the battle from their point of view, and what he had to say would rewrite the story of the Little Bighorn and Custer’s final moments.
