The shallows are full of life as grey mullets gather here to reproduce, and predators like seabass and bluefish are often not far behind. The only downside today is the strong swell, which has reduced visibility and stirred up the seabed. 🐟 Right from the first dives, grey mullets start appearing in the murky water. After an early miss, I set up a shallow ambush at around two meters and quickly land the first fish of the day. With so many mullets around, it’s tempting to keep shooting, but I decide to hold off for a while in case predators are hunting the schools nearby. After keeping an eye on distant silhouettes for a few dives, it becomes clear that only mullets are around today, so the action begins. 🐙 While reloading after another catch, I notice an octopus hidden among the rocks. Pulling it out carefully, I realize it’s feeding on a smaller octopus, something that isn’t too uncommon as competition for food and shelter can lead to cannibalism. Soon after, the swell begins to push me around in the shallows and churn up the sand even more, making ambushes harder. With the fish activity slowing down, I decide to head back to shore for a short break and try a different spot. 🎯 At the new location, schools of grey mullets appear once again, but my shooting is completely off at first. From rushing the trigger to struggling to pick the right target, a frustrating streak of misses begins. Staying calm eventually pays off, and a steady shot finally breaks the streak. Shortly after, I find another octopus hiding in its den and manage to pull out a beautiful winter octopus to add to the catch. 🔱 With sunset approaching, I return to ambushing for the final dives of the day. Plenty of schools pass through the area, and with my confidence back, I manage to land several tricky shots. One by one, more grey mullets make it onto the stringer as the session comes to an end. 🌊 There are only a few days each year when the shallows are this full of life, and winter is definitely one of the best seasons for shallow spearfishing.
