Burdened by grief and unrest, Kannagi left Madurai in search of inner peace. During her journey, she reached Siruvachur and decided to stay overnight at the Chelliamman Temple. That night, Chelliamman appeared before Kannagi and warned her not to remain there. The goddess revealed that she had been trapped by a powerful sorcerer who, after gaining boons through devotion, enslaved her using dark magic and intended to use her divine power for destructive acts. Moved by Chelliamman’s suffering, Kannagi’s compassion transformed into divine fury. When the sorcerer arrived at the temple and summoned Chelliamman, Kannagi manifested as Goddess Kali and beheaded him instantly. Realizing that it was Goddess Kali dwelling in Kannagi’s form, the dying sorcerer asked for one final boon — that his grave be placed at the temple entrance so devotees would step over it before worship, as penance for his sins. Goddess Kali granted his request. In gratitude, Chelliamman declared Siruvachur as Kannagi’s sacred abode and proclaimed her as Madurakali Amman — Kali who came from Madurai. She promised that black magic, evil spirits, and sorcery would never succeed in this holy land. Chelliamman then departed to Periyasami Hill, inviting Madurakali Amman to visit her whenever she wished. Kannagi accepted the divine role but vowed to reside at Siruvachur only two days a week, which is why temple rituals are performed exclusively on those days even today. During worship, the priest first performs aarti facing Periyasami Hill, honoring Chelliamman, before offering it to Madurakali Amman.
