In this clip from episode 26 of the "Critical Thinking: Going Deeper" podcast, Dr. Linda Elder discusses two manifestations of egocentricity – one self-deprecating, the other self-aggrandizing – and Dr. Nosich discusses how egocentricity can constrict one's mind and life. Dr. Elder goes on to discuss the importance of using one's thinking to intervene in egocentric dysfunction. Ethical principles are guides for human conduct and imply what contributes to good or harm and what one is obligated to do or not do. They also enable us to determine the ethical value of behavior regardless of whether that behavior is, strictly speaking, an obligation. Ethical reasoning is to be analyzed and assessed in the same way as any other domain of reasoning. Ethics is often confused with other modes of thought such as religion, the law, and social conventions. This video touches briefly on one or a few aspect(s) of an overarching body of theory known as the Paul-Elder Framework for Critical Thinking, and its content must be understood in the broader context of this framework.
